Hand Arm Vibration

Hand Arm Vibration

What is it?

  • Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is the collective name for injuries to blood vessels, nerves and muscles in the hands, suffered by employees who have been exposed to hazardous levels of vibration by their employers.
  • HAVS includes Vibration White Finger (VWF) which is the best known type of this condition.

Generally speaking, VWF is caused by the use of hand held tools. An employer is negligent if, knowing that such tools can cause VWF, he exposes his employees to hazardous levels of vibration and fails to take steps to reduce the risk of injury to an appropriate level.
The law prescribes what amounts to a hazardous level. Whether an employee has been sufficiently exposed is a matter of engineering evidence.
Whether that employee is actually suffering a form of HAVS is a matter of medical evidence.

Early signs to look out for……….

  • Tingling and numbness in the fingers (which can cause sleep interruption);
  • Loss of strength in the hands;
  • Whiteness of the fingers.

If you are concerned that you may be suffering from HAVS, please contact our solicitor, Claire Banks.  Claire specialises in Industrial and Occupational disease.  Most cases will be carried out on a No Win/No Fee basis.
